Our Homes
|

The L'Arche model of community based care has been valued in a CMHC study as a "best practice" in the delivery of care for those in group homes, apartment programs and day programs. Our homes at L'Arche encourage and invite each of us to enter into relationships where we discover our mutuality and interdependence.

Each of us participate in the daily tasks of creating a home together. These include such things as: preparing meals, washing dishes, cleaning our rooms, taking responsibility for personal care and managing our individual finances. Additionally, as adults coming from various life and family experiences, we learn about each other's uniqueness and differences and how this can enrich our life together.

There is a lot of visiting between the various households at L'Arche Antigonish and we often welcome our many friends and family to celebrations that make up our community life. We recognize in living together with our differences, we can become a little sign of hope for others.

Yeshua House
|

This is our first and largest home. It is located and integrated into the downtown core of Antigonish. With its large front and side verandah, white siding and blue shuttered exterior, Yeshua House depicts a typical large Nova Scotia home.

There are ten members comprising this household which includes a team of four assistants and six core members. It opened in 1979 establishing the first L'Arche community in the province. Our newly renovated chapel is also part of this property and during these many years has allowed our community to celebrate and worship together.

Although at times busy, the life and activities with this home truly reflect community life at its best and has permitted many to discover the charism of L'Arche.

Covenant House
|

Our second home located up the street from Yeshua house has in many ways become the heart of our community life today.

Its household of seven people which includes a team of three assistants, support our senior members to age gracefully. It's quiet and less busy environment reminds us of the core values of L'Arche and the importance of each person especially those who are more fragile and vulnerable being at the centre of building a good community and society.

Our many friends and volunteers who are also part of this home discover in our daily life the richness of relationships and the gentle hospitality of its members.

As our community develops and matures, we are truly blessed to have the folks at this home share the many stories of our beginnings and their fidelity to revealing their gifts to so many over the years.

Emmaus House
|

Our newest and smallest home was completely funded and built by the generosity and prayers of our many friends and supporters in the Antigonish area. Truly an affirmation of L'Arche's place within our town and county and the desire of so many to welcome persons with a developmental disability into their lives and neighbourhoods.

This active household for five people which includes two live-in assistants and a live out support person has allowed our community to become established as an important part of the care and outreach to families and those needing a home and a place of belonging.
