L'Arche Assistants
|
As part of the philosophy of L'Arche, the front line staff consist of live-in and live-out caregivers. Caregivers or "assistants" are encouraged to live in a home with people with disabilities and to share life with the same dignity and the same rights. Before arrival, staff members are screened through an application process that includes full reference and criminal record check, including a vulnerable sector search. New staff members are trained in all Core Standards and regularly participate in upgrade programs of these standards to ensure the greatest competency of care for those with disabilities.
Training in areas of autism, mental health issues, and sign language are offered regularly to staff. Staff members are also required to participate in ongoing seminars on team building and personal development. Staff members are encouraged to enrol and participate in a newly introduced distance education program at St. Francis Xavier University, A Diploma Program in Human Care.
Staff for the existing Supervised Apartment Program at L'Arche Antigonish consist of a combination of live-in and live-out members depending on the need and desire of the individuals requiring support.
L'Arche Antigonish has hired staff through an online application process in conjunction with L'Arche Canada, through local and provincial newspaper advertising, and directly form the NSCC Continuing Care program.
